Our story

Built by lawyers and engineers,
for everyone else.

Founded in 2019 in Manhattan with a single conviction: that good legal counsel should not be a luxury reserved for those who can afford $600 an hour.

Why we exist

For most people, the legal system is invisible until it isn't — until a landlord refuses to return a deposit, a contract demands signing, a relative passes without a will, an immigration form arrives in the mail. In those moments, the historical answer was: pay $400 for a consultation, wait two weeks for an opening, hope the attorney's expertise matches your problem.

That gap — between everyday legal questions and the gatekept world that holds the answers — is the gap LawAdvice was built to close.

The two questions that started us

In late 2018, our co-founders Marcus Chen and Dr. Elena Vasquez sat in a coffee shop in the Village arguing about two questions:

Marcus, a former partner at Halverson Crane LLP, asked: "Why does it take seven days for a paying client to get a clear answer to a question I could review in fifteen minutes?"

Elena, then leading legal NLP research at Westmoor University, asked: "Why are we still pretending AI can practice law unsupervised — when the real opportunity is letting AI do the drafting and lawyers do the verifying?"

Six months later, LawAdvice was incorporated in Delaware. The premise was simple: machines draft, attorneys verify, clients get clarity in minutes instead of weeks. Six years on, that founding premise has not changed.
